The environments where we live and work every day can be the ideal place for the growth and development of pathogens that are harmful to our health. Mist or stagnant water, hot water recirculation networks, air conditioners, and storage tanks are all at risk for bacterial contamination. This is why they require thorough disinfection actions.

Safer environments

Both in public facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, schools, etc.), and in private ones (hotels, swimming pools, wellness centres, tourism centres in general), where people share common areas and use the same water, hygiene and cleaning of water systems are a priority that must be guaranteed with absolute certainty. In fact, water circuits are characterised by critical areas: inside pipes, in stagnation or accumulation points, in boilers, showers, in the distribution terminals and in hot water recirculation systems, pathogens find the ideal environmental conditions to grow and develop.

Legionella

Legionella can be found in all natural aquatic environments, such as rivers, lakes and spring waters and, from there, it flows up through water pipes, artificial circuits, toilets, tanks, pools, etc. It is one of the most common pathogenic agents and it represents a health hazard. Legionella sees its maximum development in the presence of suitable conditions such as temperature, aerobic environments, water stagnation, presence of biofilms and / or amoebae.

The infection can be contracted through aerosol and it causes between 5% and 10% of the total cases of community acquired pneumonia and between 3% and 20% of all hospital pneumonia. In Italy there are a few hundred cases each year, of which between 5% and 15% are lethal . Since 2000, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian health institute) has set up guidelines for the prevention and control of legionellosis (OJ No. 103 of May 5, 2000), which over the years were followed by new national and European regulations.
